Predominant population of the district comprises of Hindus followed by Muslim, Bhudhists, Sikhs, Christians and Jains constitute the negligible proportion of the district population. The main Rajput communities in the district are Katoch, Pathania, Dogra, Jasrotia, Jaswal, Jamwal, Katwal, Guleria, Mian, Thakur, Rana, Rathi etc. Scheduled tribes population is negligible in the district. Jhamakada is a popular group dance performed in Kangra. This dance is exclusively performed by women. The dance is accompanied by a variety of percussion instruments and lyrical songs.
Language in Kangra( कांगड़ी भाषा )
कांगड़ी भाषा डोगरी और पंजाबी भाषा का मिश्रण है । इसे टांकरी लिपि में लिखा गया है|Although the official language of Himachal Pradesh is Hindi, people here speak a dialect called Kangri. Basically, it is an Aryan dialect related to Dogri. Because of close cohabitation, the language has also been deeply influenced by Punjabi. To add to the confusion, Kangri is classified as Western Pahari. Some peoples of kangra are also speak gaddi Language, Gaddi language is famous in upper kangra(Dharamshala, Palampur, Shahpur etc. places.
Kangri (कांगड़ी) language(भाषा )
Kangri is a member of the Western Pahari branch of the Indo-Aryan language family. It is spoken in northern India, mainly in the Kangra, Hamirpur and Una districts of Himachal Pradesh, and in the Gurdaspur and Hoshiarpur districts of Punjab. In 2011 there were about 1.12 million speakers of Kangri, which is also known as Kangra-Dogri, Pahari, Himachali or Pahari Kangri.Kangri is used in literature, on the radio and in education. It is written with the Devanagari script, and used to be written with Takri script. It has no official status, and some people consider it a dialect of Dogri, Hindi or Punjabi.
Music in Kangra(संगीत )
Music is a part of life in Kangra. People here burst out in songs whatever is the occasion. Consequently, different genres of songs have developed over the years. Some celebrates births while others celebrate weddings. Some like Pakharu, on the other hand, depict the pain of separation. They are so popular that even on happy occasions women sing four or five ritualistic songs and then switch to Pakharu. Besides there are Barsati sung by women engaged in agriculture and Dholru sung by the basket makers of Kangra. All these genres of songs are always sung in chorus. Because of their repetitive nature, they are not at all hard to follow.
Dances in Kangra(नृत्य)
Among the dances of this region, Jhamakada is most popular. This form of dance is also known as Nanoo Vinayaka and Navami ka Swang. It is a group dance performed exclusively by the ladies. Earlier men were not even allowed to watch it and if they were caught peeping in they were punished by the dancers.
Jhamakadas are generally all night affairs and are performed during wedding or thread ceremonies. These dances generally depict the different incidents of life. Dancers often dress up as men. Rhythmic songs and percussion music accompany these dances. Besides Jhamakads, Gidha and Chanderwali are two other dance form of this region. Among them, Gidha are for womenfolk and Chanderwali for men. Because close connection, Punjabi dance form Bhangra has also become very popular here. In some places like Dharamshala, Palampur, Shahpur and other places in kangra Gaddi nati and Some Bharmouri Natti is also famous.
Marriages in Kangra ‘(વિવાહ)
विवाह’ शब्द का प्रयोग मुख्य रूप से दो अर्थों में होता है। इसका पहला अर्थ वह क्रिया, संस्कार, विधि या पद्धति है; जिससे पति-पत्नी के ‘स्थायी’-संबंध का निर्माण होता है। प्राचीन एवं मध्यकाल के धर्मशास्त्री तथा वर्तमान युग के समाजशास्त्री, समाज द्वारा अनुमोदित, परिवार की स्थापना करनेवाली किसी भी पद्धति को विवाह मानते हैं। मनुस्मृति के टीकाकार मेधातिथि (३। २०) के शब्दों में विवाह एक निश्चित पद्धति से किया जाने वाला, अनेक विधियों से संपन्न होने वाला तथा कन्या को पत्नी बनाने वाला संस्कार है। रघुनंदन के मतानुसार उस विधि को विवाह कहते हैं जिससे कोई स्त्री (किसी की) पत्नी बनती है। विवाह का दूसरा अर्थ समाज में प्रचलित एवं स्वीकृत विधियों द्वारा स्थापित किया जानेवाला दांपत्य संबंध और पारिवारिक जीवन भी होता है। इस संबंध से पति-पत्नी को अनेक प्रकार के अधिकार और कर्तव्य प्राप्त होते हैं।
Kangri Dhaam( कांगड़ी धाम )
धाम शादी, जन्मदिन की पार्टी, सेवानिवृत्ति पार्टी या किसी भी धार्मिक अवसरों पर कांगड़ी संस्कृति के लोगों के लिए दोपहर का भोजन है। धाम में सबसे पहले पके हुए चावल और मधरा जो सफ़ेद चने, राजमाह, या पनीर परोसा जाता है। उसके बाद फिर से चावल परोसे जाते है , और फिर कड़ी ,माह (तेली माह ) की दाल, खट्टा और अंत में मीठा भत (मीठे चावल) परोसे जाते हैं |
कांगड़ी धाम केवल बोटीयों द्वारा पकाई जाती है (ब्राह्मणों की एक विशेष जाति जो वंशानुगत रसोईये हैं)। इस विस्तृत भोजन की तैयारी रात से पहले शुरू होती है। खाना पकाने के लिए इस्तेमाल किए जाने वाले बर्तन आम तौर पर पीतल वाले होते हैं जन्हें चरोटी या बलटोई कहा जाता है । यह उन लोगों में परोसा जाता है जो ज़मीन पर बैठते हैं। भोजन पतलू नामक पत्तो की प्लेटों पर दिया जाता है (स्थानीय कांगड़ी भाषा में)। धाम में सादे सुगंधित चावल, तली हुई दालें या दाल, मधरा, राजमह, कड़ी, माह की दाल, चने का खट्टा, और अंत में मीठा भात (भात चावल को कांगड़ी भाषा में बोलते हैं ) परोसा जाता है|
